See You in 2024 in Person! Inshallah!
Submissions are open now - THE FILM FESTIVAL WILL BE IN PERSON AROUND THE WORLD IN 2024
What a year it’s been for Global Muslim Film as we have seen our film & television ecosystem taken to new heights. From Farah Nabalusi’s Oscar-nominated short film The Present, to Bassam Tariq & Riz Ahmed’s Mogul Mowgli, to Majid Majidi’s Sun Children, to the CTV/ NBC’s breakout hit Transplant, to Disney+ American Eid as part of their LaunchPad program and the launch of their Ms. Marvel TV series at the end of this year, to Omar Sy’s Lupin, the continuing global domination of Turkish TV series like Osman, and Ethos, Ken Burn’s upcoming 8 hour Muhammad Ali documentary, the stunning documentary, and reflection on death Two Gods, Regina King’s One Night in Miami, and Noor Kids crowdfunding their own animated TV pilot, you could say there is a lot to talk about.
That’s just some of what’s been made recently, let alone what’s coming. We are especially excited about all of the film programs and supporting platforms emerging to support the global Muslim film ecosystem. From the upcoming Muslim focused streamer USHUB, which is already funding productions, to the executive producers of The Present launching the M Film Lab, the Pillars Fund in partnership with Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films launching the $25,000 unrestricted artists fellowship focused on screenwriters and directors plus their important report Missing & Maligned: The Reality of Muslims in Popular Global Movies with USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, and the launch of Muslim Casting by Serena Rasoul. The MPAC Hollywood Bureau has been especially busy this year launching important partnerships with the Black List, to develop the Muslim List, the Screenwriting Lab for Black Muslim Writers with The Blackhouse Foundation, and a $10,000 artist development fellowship for a screenwriter accepted to one of Film Independent's programs.
While this is all beautiful, it all still has huge gaps and that’s some of what we hope to capture again this year with the Global Muslim Film Festival and our report to be launched with the festival, The State of Global Muslim Film from Streaming Platforms to Local Film Markets. We delayed the 2nd annual edition of the Global Muslim Film Festival with hopes to create some film pop-up weekends in different parts of the world, but with the Delta Variant, we are going to keep the festival totally online again for 2021. Missed the first edition of the Global Muslim Film Festival? You can check out many of the programs here.
Our goal with the film festival is to showcase the inherent diasporic global nature of the Muslim film ecosystem so we are looking for all types of films, from all over the world. From feature-length films and documentaries, television shows and pilots from around the world, music videos, and all kinds of digital storytelling.
