Health & Medicine
There is a broad set of research on Muslims working in medicine and health issues faced by Muslims around the world that we hope to look at. These include:
Muslim doctors in the United States and around the world make up one of the largest percentages of doctors by any community in our world.
Muslim communities around the world have some of the fastest growing health issues ranging from obesity, to cancer, to heart disease and diabetes but this research has not been quantified in any area of research.
Muslim communities also have hybrid forms of traditional medicines practiced around the world that are understudied with millions of pages of traditional Islamic medicine manuscripts left largely unstudied. In this set of research we will look at how traditional Islamic medicine is practiced today while also creating opportunities for studying traditional Islamic manuscripts.
War, the Global Refugee Crisis, Poverty, and Good Governance
This component of the Center will research the impact of war on Muslim communities around the world over the last 50 years which has led to Muslims making up more than 70% of global refugee populations. This will also look at the state of weaponry and warfare by Muslim majority nations.
Climate Change
Core research on the state of climate change across Muslim countries, and the issues that will impact Muslim societies ranging from: extreme weather and heat, to sea level rise in cities, the decline of fisheries and reefs in places like Indonesia where some populations rely on fish as their primary source of food.
