20 Resources for Converts to Islam & Spiritual Seekers
There’s a lot to be said about the marathon which is the lifelong journey of converting to Islam. As the founder of the Center for Global Muslim Life, I converted in 2002 at another time of mass conversion as we are seeing right now. As a kid from the suburbs of Colorado who almost didn’t graduate from High School, I could never have imagined the world that Allah would open to me as a Muslim, let alone that I would lead a center like this. As converts, we are blessed with a clear vision of the reality that we are being called to as an intermediary between the world of Islam, and the worlds and cultures we were born into.
In those early days after our shahada (testimony of faith) it is important that we make our intentions clear that this path is not just about ourselves but about the future of our familiy’s existence on this earthly plane. We have to understand that walking this path is hard and there will be constant peaks and valleys in this journey, especially if we come from backgrounds of trauma and addiction like myself. We should try to be rid of the parts of our lives that bring us down, while also understanding that it can take time and you need both high aspiration (hima) in this faith as well as the divine assistance (tawfiq) that we beg Allah for in this journey.. I’m working on developing a book and a course documenting my own journey and answering in a very deep way, that often-asked question, “Why did you convert to Islam”? It’s titled, My 20-Year Journey to Islam from Trauma & Addiction to Belief & Transformation.

Many of us come to Islam with baggage that isn’t easily removed, and it’s a blessing that one. of the students from Tayba Foundation’s prison-based Islamic Studies program, Ahmad Adisa, wrote this powerful new book that Islamisizes the 12-Step Program. “Overcoming Addiction guides the reader through a recovery plan based on an Islamic framework. This book provides the reader with a detailed explanation of the 12-Steps model, with religious teachings and methods derived from the Qur’an and the teachings and practice of the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him.”
